In the Brush Creek Valley of Western Colorado, nature and luxury combine in unexpected and wonderful ways.

The hillsides rise steeply, more than 2,000 feet straight up, from the green valley to the top of Skinner Ridge.

Below the cliffs, sheltered by the canyon walls, there is a resort with a lodge and a lake and guesthouses, as refined and elegant, as the land is wild and untamed.

This is Kessler Canyon, an extraordinarily beautiful place, with so many different aspects that it defies easy definition.

Kessler Canyon is first a ranch with more than 23,000 deeded and leased acres that sprawl for miles through the valley and across the mesa.

It is also a premier Western resort with a well-deserved reputation for superb accommodations and exceptional service.

And it is a renowned hunting and sporting retreat.

But most of all, Kessler Canyon is a private canyon.

It is a rare thing to own a canyon. Especially a canyon this large.

Kessler Canyon is located 17 miles north of Interstate 70 between Grand Junction, about an hour to the west, and Rifle, about an hour to the east.

The property’s 23,000 acres include 14,096 deeded acres and 8,600 acres leased from a neighbor.
The canyon itself stretches for six miles within the ranch. The ranch itself extends for another 12 miles along the mesa.

The Powder Horn Ski Area is 45 minutes from the ranch. Vail, Beaver Creek and Aspen ski areas are two hours away.

Denver is about 230 miles from Kessler Canyon, with the Denver International Airport about four hours by car from the ranch. Walker Field near Grand Junction, about an hour from the ranch, has direct commercial flights to Denver, Dallas, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, and other regional hubs. Garfield County Regional Airport at Rifle accommodates most private aircraft.

When entrepreneur Richard C. Kessler bought the property, it was an unimproved ranch.
Nature gave the place good bones. Kessler, who is known for developing exquisite luxury hotels, built the rest.

Kessler’s vision produced an award-winning resort that remains at its heart a true Western Colorado Ranch. The main lodge and guesthouses are scaled for intimate gatherings and small groups—perfect for entertaining friends and family.

This authenticity and attention to scale makes the ranch quite suitable for private ownership as a hunting property or a family retreat.

Homestead Lodge has 20,000 square feet, furnished with original artwork and Western furniture. The ground floor features public rooms with large stone fireplaces and deep leather sofas. The main dining room and kitchen, well-appointed executive board rooms, a pro shop and a VIP suite also are on the first floor.

Guest rooms are on the second floor of the lodge.

The owner’s suite occupies the entire third floor.

The lodge also has a private wine-tasting room, a movie theater, an exercise room, a game room and two secured room for guns and collectibles. The Poseidon Spa has massage rooms, sauna, steam room and baths.

Eight acres of manicured lawns and 100-year-old apple trees from the original orchard surround the Homestead Lodge.

The Orchard Lake Guesthouse has a private VIP suite with living room, dining room and kitchen, plus five guest rooms, a large meeting area and a rod-and-gun room.

Kessler Canyon is well suited to host large corporate events.

There are four lakes for canoeing and fishing.

Elk and deer range the mesa along Skinner Ridge.

Quail, pheasant and turkey —
the valley and along the creek provides a rich natural habitat for upland birds.

Throughout the ranch, the native grasses and brush have been managed to support the wildlife.

For the hunters, there are superb amenities modeled after some of the finest hunting lodges in Europe and Africa.

There is eight-station shooting pavilion — perfect for target practice and competitive marksmanship – or lessons from the Kessler Canyon Shooting Academy instructors.

Rod and gun rooms provide secure storage for firearms. And then there is the Safari lounge for drinks after the hunt.

For the archers, there is a walking course with 12 targets.

Kessler Canyon has top-quality maintenance and storage building, garages, kennels and mechanical facilities, as well as staff housing.

Hiking, ATV and horseback trails crisscross the ranch.

Wind and water created the canyon over thousands of years. The Kessler family spent more than a decade developing the ranch and the resort.

The result is a place of unparalleled natural beauty and cultivated elegance:

Kessler Canyon.
Nature and luxury in perfect harmony.

Video Transcript:

All around are snowcapped peaks, and to the east, the crazy mountains, Willow Creek twists and turns through the green valley. The sandstone cliffs above Fairy Creek shine white in the sun. You will find Willow Creek a place of extraordinary beauty. More than 19,000 acres of pasture, forest, and hills. Seven miles wide and nine miles long.  Willow Creek Ranch is large, even by Montana standards, it’s also only five minutes away from Livingston, a favorite for artists and anglers. In a state where large ranches are notoriously remote, Willow Creek Ranch is one of the rare properties that is both large and well located.

North of interstate 90, Willow Creek Ranch encompasses 19,419 total acres. Willow Creek, in it’s three forks, travel through the ranch for a total of 14.7 miles, Fairy Creek runs through the ranch for 9.3 miles before it empties into the Yellowstone River. Livingston is just two miles from the ranch. Mission Field airport 5 miles east of Livingston has two jet capable runways. Bozeman and the entrance to Yellowstone are only an hour’s drive from the ranch.

Livingston is home to the International Federation of Fly-fishers museum and no wonder, South Western Montana is quite possibly the Valhalla of fly fishing. The legendary Yellowstone River is one of the greatest fly-fishing rivers in the lower 48 states flows through Livingston. World class spring creek fishers, also are just minutes from Willow Creek Ranch. The north fork, south fork, and middle fork, converge below the ridge to form the main strand of the creek. Good sized trout are common here.

The elevation on the ranch rises from 4500 feet to 6900 feet above sea level on the slopes of the ridge. Most of the ranch is just native range land. The ranch currently supports 600 animals, with 260 acres of irrigated meadow, and 900 dry land acres planted in wheat. More than 10 miles of irrigations ditches feed the meadows.

Willow Creek Ranch, which lies at the southern reach of the Yellowstone-Yukon migratory route is easily one of the better Elk Hunting ranches in Montana. Elk also spend fall and winter on the ranch. The current owner uses limited grazing practices which support the native grasses. The game has been managed to create a high quality hunting experiences.

The ranch headquarters at the southeastern quarter of the property includes corrals, sheds, grain bins, and a scale house. Houses for the manager and staff are near the headquarters. The main house, with a large horse barn, sits in the middle of a valley with stunning views of the ridge and the Crazy Mountains. Built in the early 1900s, the house was meticulously renovated under the guise of a local architect.

The Crow Indians knew this place, William Clark explored it, hunters, trappers, and ranchers came here. The railroad arrived and Livingston grew up, but, over the ridge and out of sight, the land remains as it has always been, a land of extraordinary beauty and promise, the Willow Creek Ranch.
